PRACTISED LEADERSHIP-7 : TO BECOME A LEADER-QUOTES 16 TO 20

Can there be a better way to learn leadership than ‘practice it’? The experiences of practiced leadership is what is covered in this series. These articles cover the basics of ‘PRACTICED LEADERSHIP’. You just make your own decision on how you want to develop as a leader.

PRACTISED LEADERSHIP-7

Quote-16

Can you have two set of rules, one for your family and one for the world ? If answer is “YES”, GOD save the world from you.
BE IMPARTIAL. HAVE JUST ONE MEASURING SCALE.
– Col Sanjay Pande –

The pitfall for any human being is to have two rules, one for family, where any and everything is justified and one for the world where the projection of all desirable qualities of a leader are in full public view. Will people ever trust you? Why should they? The tolerance level at home needs to be extended to outside world for it to become an extended family. It’s the hardest thing to follow but then you want to become a leader right? Not everyone has a peek in your home to see how you are at home at the same time the household does not have an idea of how you handle things outside. This is the gap exploited by a person. Two sets of rules for two different sets of people. This is the birth of a hypocrite. Nepotism kills a leader. Without nepotism the world looks to be a place not worth living. Hence, I say that this is the pitfall for any person wanting to be a leader. The day you bridge this gap and have the same set of rules , it is ‘you’ who will find the joys of leadership. You will not try to isolate and insulate your home from world. It is open for all to see. That’s how one becomes impartial. Do not mix family relation with professionalism. You want your son to have something that is essentially your achievement? Just skill him. Prepare him. Extend this logic to everything, you are on way to become a great leader.

Quote-17

Your deeds need to be known by all by word of mouth of those who follow you and NOT by you repeating till people get deaf.
DON’T BLOW YOUR OWN TRUMPET
– Col Sanjay Pande –

Most people spend time in blowing own trumpet. The gathering may be business or friend circle, topic is always ‘me’. This happens more in military where due to seniority, the subordinates exercise ‘silence’. Its always about own achievements and most of the talk time is consumed by the person. Soon as he turns back and goes away, giggles and bitching starts. Why does it happen? Everybody knows that the person is very average but due to his seniority he ‘force blows his trumpet’. What you are and what you have achieved must always remain an exclusive topic for ‘others’. Your task is to carry on doing what you are supposed to. Leave judgement on others. Let then talk. Soon, your reputation will precede you. Whether it is good or bad will be dictated by your professional competence and character. You do not become a leader, you become one by constant practice. Do not waste time in telling others what you are, they know. Never forget, while your two eyes and one brain see 100 people, 200 eyes and 100 brains ‘see’ you. You cannot get away.

Quote-18

If you follow a leader, will you become a ‘leader’ or be a ‘follower’?
CHART YOUR OWN PATH.

– Col Sanjay Pande –

Should you follow a leader to become a leader? If there is a person who is an ideal leader as per you and you decide to follow him in order to become a good leader, that makes you what? A follower. Can a follower ever become a leader? Never. Aim should be to find the most appealing character traits in people, pick selectively and mould your nature accordingly. You may have many such people in life which is fine. Fine tune your nature and create for yourself a new ‘you’. This is the person who will develop into a good leader. To be an explorer you cannot walk on beaten track or explored routes, you simply need to take them as pointers to chart your own path, your own destiny.

Quote-19

LOYALTY a ‘word’ most misused to progress your career. Your loyalty is with the person who holds key to your achieving success or a person who is an obstacle?

DEVELOP 360 DEGREE LOYALTY

– Col Sanjay Pande –

You are 50% a leader just if you are clear in this. Loyalty, we misunderstand, as being towards the boss. There is a reason. The boss is an ‘obstacle’ to achieving a promotion, favour or something you want. It is this feeling of ‘nuisance value’ that gets converted to loyalty. Ask yourself, is this loyalty? In being loyal to the boss, were you loyal to your peers or subordinates? Your going up on professional ladder is not up to your boss to pull you up, it is to your peers and subordinates to push you up. The people who will push of lift us are the ones we are disloyal to. Develop 360 degree loyalty.

Quote-20

Today’s ‘BOSS’ is ‘tomorrows’ reference check guy. Ass licking is an investment. Returns may or may not come.

INVEST IN COMPETENCE. 100% RETURNS GUARANTEED

– Col Sanjay Pande –

Do I need to elaborate above? Invest in competence.
