“THINK”-VISION with colsanjaypande – Post-4

Why do you exist if you don’t have ‘vision’? Whether its vision, mission, foresight or planning, everything boils down to ‘thinking’. It’s not complicated. We just need to think rationally. Do we?

Big ads in newspapers speak of how big a ‘visionary’ a person was. Bullshit. That person ‘thought’ much better than others. Who stopped you from “thinking”? Who stopped you having a vision? It definitely is not a special endowment from God.

Vision is nothing else but selecting a target deep in future, build the imaginary structure, bring it to life and treat it as a living entity that exists just for you, made by you and to which only you know the path. The ability of mind to ‘think’ makes it possible. Childhood gives you ‘dreams’ where as adulthood permits you ‘vision’. Vision is not enslaved by rich. It shows when rich do it since it is publicised. A small time person can have vision of his future and work towards it. He will be 100% successful if he achieves it.

Giving a small example. Having come up in Air Force Stations where there was just one school and in remote areas, my education suffered in quality and frequency. 13 schools in 11 years. I got very average marks, 54-56% and was generally was convinced that I was mediocre. Had a dream that if ever I get a chance I will not let education of my children suffer. We did well in college. My brother got a Gold Medal in post-graduation, merit in another. I was first division in graduation. I realized in initial years that I had a very sharp brain, I did exceedingly well technically and academically in Army. The dream had turned into vision by now. I spent huge amount of time in educating myself. I sacrificed my career for my children’s education. Post retirement I started taking on responsibility of education of children of deceased soldiers, under privileged and deserving. To me education was one, there are many and I pursue each. So who said ‘vision’ is to do with business or politics only? A person can have multiple ‘visions’ so far he has passion.

Vision is about ‘achievement’ based on your beliefs. Working towards your ‘vision’ is what drives you. Not having a vision is as good as living an inert life. You can decide upon your vision for a particular belief at whatever age. Vision is like that dream land Vasco-da-Gama saw, that mountain tip on horizon or that lighthouse just on horizon. You can have as many dreams as possible.

Remember, day dreaming and dreaming with passion are two different things. One leads to fiction, other to reality. Vision is intertwined with passion. A person requires both to achieve the vision. The vision can be short term, medium term or long term. It depends on if you want to achieve it at what point in time. A long term vision has nothing to do with our life expectancy. The vision goes beyond human life to be improved and carried on by others.

How do we start? Why be confused? Vision is all about your passion. To feed that passion you need to build character, capability, commitment and competency.

To build all of above we need to develop the ‘Art of Thinking”. The “THINK” series is all about learning the art of thinking.
